過去進行時表示過去某一時刻或某段時間正在進行的動作。過去進行時由“was/were+
動詞-ing形式”構成。
1.過去進行時的各種句式：
肯定句：主語+was/were+動詞-ing形式。如：
I was reading at this time yesterday.
昨天這個時候我正在看書。
否定句：主語+was/were+not+動詞-ing形式。如：
I wasn't reading at this time yesterday.
昨天這個時候我沒在看書。
疑問句：
(1)一般疑問句：was/were+主語+動詞-ing形式。
肯定回答：Yes,主語+was/were.否定回答：No,主語+wasn't/weren't.
如：
--Were you reading at this time yesterday?
--昨天這個時候你在看書嗎？
--Yes,I was./No,I wasn't.
--是的，我在看。/不，我沒在看。
(2)特殊疑問句：疑問詞+was/were+主語+動詞-ing形式。如：
What were you doing at this time yesderday?

2.過去進行時的用法基本用法：
(1)表示過去某一時刻或某一段時間內(nèi)正在進行的動作，常與時間狀語
at that time,at that moment,at this time yesterday,at ten o'clock
yesterday等連用。如：
Were you playing basketball at four yesterday afternoon?
昨天下午四點你們在打籃球嗎？
(2)表示在過去一段時間內(nèi)持續(xù)進行的動作（有時也可以有間歇）。如：
We were watching TV from seven to nine last night.
昨天晚上七點到九點的時候我們在看電視。
She was singing from 7:00 to 7:30 last night.
她昨晚七點至七點半在唱歌。
特殊用法：
(1)常用于介紹故事的背景。如：
Once an Arab was traveling in the desert.
從前，有個阿拉伯人在沙漠中旅行。
(2)when引導的從句表示一個短暫的時間點，謂語動詞用一般過去時，主句
用一般過去時或過去進行時；while引導的從句表示一段持續(xù)的時間，主句為
一般過去時，從句謂語動詞用過去進行時。如：

I was writing a letter when he came in.
當他進來時，我正在寫信。
The telephone rang while she was washing.
當她正在洗衣服時，電話響了。
(3)過去進行時常與always,continually等連用，表示過去反復發(fā)生的行為
動作，帶有贊美、厭煩等感情色彩。如：
He was continually asking her questions.
