使用過去完成時的幾種情況
by+表示過去的時間
By three o'clock yesterday afternoon we had finished the work.
有when,before,after引導的時間狀語從句的句子中
Mr.Wang had taught in that school for 20 year before he came here.
it was+一段時間+since 引導的時間狀語從句
It's was 5 years since he had come here.
it was+the+序數(shù)詞+time that 從句中
It was the second time that he had visited the city.
表示未曾實現(xiàn)的希望、打算、計劃、意圖
I had meant to see you,but it was too late.
在no sooner-than...,hardly...when...結構中than 和when 后的從句用一般過去時，主句則使用完成時。
He had hardly reached there when it began to snow.
8.The tramp,a poor,homeless man with a moustache,wore large trousers,worn-out shoes and a small round black hat.

hat 前有三個形容詞修飾，形容詞的排列順序是：限定詞、描繪性形容詞、顏色、國籍、材料、用途或出處+名詞
一棟木質(zhì)白色小房子
a little white wooden house
一塊紅色的中國造羊毛地毯
a red Chinese woollen carpet.
9.He walked around stiffly carring a walking stick.
walking stick 中walking 作其前置定語，動名詞，表示所修飾動詞的用途
a swimming cap(=a cap which is used for swimmiing),a reading room
單個現(xiàn)在分詞也作前置定語，表示一個正在進行的動作。
a sleeping boy(=a boy who is sleeping)
10.This character was a social failure.
句子中failure 是可數(shù)名詞，英語中有一些抽象名詞當表示具體的人或事時，特別是名詞前面有形容詞修飾時，就成了可數(shù)名詞。如：
experience,difficulty,beauty,danger,surprise,cold,failure,success等
He answered in surprise.
It was a great surprise that he suddenly appeared on a rainy night.
Failure is the mother of success.
The concert was a great success.
11.They are so hungry that they try boiling a pair of leather shoes for their dinner.
try doing sth.試著做某事
try to do sth.盡力做某事
try on 試穿

12.Charlie first picks out the laces and eats them as if they were spaghetti.
pick out 選出，挑出；辨別出；弄清楚
We succeeded in picking out its meaning.
I picked out her face in the crowd.
as if 引導的方式狀語從句或表語從句的內(nèi)容有時與事實相反，這時，從句中需用虛擬語氣。
He talks to me like as if he were my father.
He looks as if he had mey a ghost.
